Payson is a small mountain town in Gila County, Arizona, about 90 miles northeast of Phoenix. It’s known for cooler weather, pine forests, and outdoor recreation—making it a popular getaway from the desert heat. Payson is essentially Arizona’s “mountain escape town”—close enough to Phoenix for a weekend trip, but different enough to feel like a completely different environment with trees, lakes, and fresh air. Founded in the 1880s as a ranching/logging town, Payson hosts the World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo (since 1884). It was influenced by Western author Zane Grey and is known for festivals, car shows, and small-town events.
